About NeuroStar TMS Therapy
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used to target key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression.
During a treatment session, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. These magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on the brains neurotransmitter levels, making long term remission possible.

No. TMS Therapy has been FDA-cleared since 2008 as a safe and effective treatment. TMS is currently FDA approved for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Anxious Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and smoking cessation. TMS for Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, ADHD, stroke rehabilitation, and other are currently being studied and are cTMS Therapyonsidered experimental.

In clinical trials, fewer than 5% of people discontinued treatment due to adverse events. The most common side effect was temporary pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during therapy that usually resolves within the first week of treatment.

TMS Therapy is widely reimbursed by most commercial and government health plans, including Medicare and Tricare. We will work with you to obtain authorization from your insurance company. Please contact us for specific inquires about your insurance.

Unlike TMS, ECT involves general anesthesia and is considered an invasive treatment. You will be able to drive yourself to and from your TMS sessions and are awake the entire time. ECT uses electric currents, whereas TMS uses magnetic fields (similar to an MRI). ECT can also have side effects that are not associated with TMS treatment, such as memory loss, confusion and nausea.

TMS treatment is administered in the office 5 days a week for approximately 6-8 weeks. Don’t let this scare you! We work very hard to accommodate your schedule, and can always write a letter to excuse you from work. Each appointment lasts about 15-30 minutes; 10 minutes of preparation and 20 minutes of treatment.
Before Treatment
We’ll speak with you about your day and check-in with how you’re doing.
You’ll recline comfortably in the treatment chair.
A small, curved magnetic coil will be positioned lightly on your head.
During Treatment
The treatment coil delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of your brain.
You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation at the treatment site.
Our TMS administrators will offer therapy tools and company as they observe your treatment.
After Treatment
You can resume normal activities immediately.
You can drive yourself to and from your appointment.
